Zorinsky Federal Building Waffle Slab Strengthening
The Zorinsky Federal Building recently underwent a major renovation that included the removal of the center bay on a seven bay continuous waffle slab system to create an open atrium area.
The removal of the center bay on two floors meant the demands on the waffle slab sections had to be redistributed. Thus, mid-spans became end-spans next to the new open bay and flexural strengthening was required.
The carbon-based Tyfo® SCH-41 Composite System was utilized to add flexural capacity to the waffle slab stems. Additionally, the Tyfo® Advanced Fire Protection System was installed over the composite to give the system a UL 4-hour fire rating.
The waffle slab was left exposed to serve as an architectural feature, providing an aesthetic, low-profile, fire-rated strengthening system.
